orchestral-manoeuvres-in-the-dark-omd-inspired-souvenir-art-print-music-poster
Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark OMD-inspired 'Souvenir' Art Print Music Poster

After about 1,000 posters and 4 years, I was shocked -- shocked -- to realize I'd never done a poster for my all-time favourite OMD song (maybe it's the trauma of having to look up how to spell 'manoeuvres' every. single. time.). Oh this song is so good, and has such a mood to it . . . specifically, a sad, wistful, lonely, melancholic, saudade mood to it. So I went on a long hunt to find something that captured that mood, and ideally captured what it was like to be subsumed into this song in the 80s, as a teenager wondering when life was going to start coming into focus. I didn't get anywhere with retro vintage pulp paperback covers, though I tried. Then I asked myself who the preeminent artists of disenfranchised loneliness were, and of course immediately thought of Edward Hopper, who is simply the GOAT of alienation and melancholy (you might know his work through his most famous piece, Nighthawks). This image is from his 1927 painting Automat, and it's beyond perfect for the vibe of the song - it's simply magnificent narrative congruence, even 100 years later (yes: let that sink in a bit).

So, if you're shopping for something ultra-cool for the OMD or classic 80s new wave music fan in your life (mayhap that's you!) then you finally got to the right place. Long end of the tail!
